Annotation #2

Annotation #2 Summary: In the article, "Visual Discourse Analysis" by Peggy Albers, she states how important a visual text can be then how people really think it is. Many people ignore the visual and don't really give that much attention but in reality, visual texts are use as an interpretation of a text. Visual text always leave behind a powerful meaning for the viewers to see and realize. By knowing the different types of texts, people will be able to have the will to be able to express their ideas of what they know through the different range of media. Just goes to show that their is a deeper meaning with visual texts then what is expected. 3 Quotes: "While visual texts in ELA classes are a commonplace, they continue to be superficially or ignored...." This is something that I can relate as my time in high school, many of my English teachers would hand out visual texts and most of the students didn't really put the effort into trying to dig deep...

Practice Writing

The way I tried to annotate the article was by highlighting them on my laptop and just highlight sentences that seem interesting and catch my attention. By doing so I would try to see if these annotations had something in common with me and my personal experiences. On the second article there wasn't really anything that I annotated because it was pretty much already annotated for me with interesting information. The one thing I did was look up the author and what they profession and where they are from but did not take any notes.

Annotation #1

Annotation #1 Summary: In the first article titled "The Importance of The Act of Reading" by Paulo Freire, we are being informed about the importance of reading. Not only is reading having to do with just understanding the words, but also trying to connect it with the real world or to connect with your own personal experiences. As Paulo Freire explains, he always wants the reading to help him relive his childhood and see how the reading has any significance to him. By better understanding of the reading, you'll be able to have a feeling with every word as it describes someone's personal experience and it's connection to the real world. 3 Quotes: "Some of the trees were like persons to me, such the intimacy between us." My reaction to this quote was pretty interesting as I was able to understand how Freire was able to build a relationship with trees, even though it's not a human being. "The earth was my blackboard; sticks, my chalk" T...

Top 2 Book Club Choices

My top two book club choices have to be The Complete Persepolis and The Hundred Secret Senses. I read a little about these two books online and also searched up the authors. What amazes me is that these two books really connect to the author's personal lives as they actually experienced these moments in some way. Marjane Satrapi is from Iran and was able to experience the Iranian Revolution, which was people wanted to overthrow the Pahlavi dynasty in 1979. Amy Tan on the other hand is from Oakland , California, and was sent to Switzerland at the age of 15. She lost her father and brother to brain tumors before being sent out to Switzerland to continue studying. She would know a secret about her mother when she finished high school that would forever change her whole view on her. The biggest reason I chose these two books was because it caught my attention a lot after doing a little bit of research on the author and learning a little bit about their personal lives.

Practice Writing 8/29

Pre-reading strategies that I do is that like to read the back of the book to get a brief overview of what the book might be about, to see if the book will interest me or not. I also like to do a quick research of the author to know a little bit more about them and see what their books are all about. I sometimes like to read the first few sentences to get the gist of what kind of writing style the author likes to approach.

Syllabus Response

Reading through the syllabus, I feel that by taking this class, I will be able to dig deeper into finding meaning in how "everything is a text." The way I see it is by thinking about my past experience to get me to where I am today. Everything that I went through can be analyzed and dug deep into helping me become a better writer, especially for my literacy experiences. I know that I can connect to this with other people around the world, because I know I'm not the only one whose gone through difficult moments in my life. Having writing practices will not only help me become better with my writing practices, but also realize the different types of writing that I can approach to make things more different and intriguing. There isn't really anything that I'm concerned about with the syllabus, as it's pretty straight forward. In other words, I can't to realize what skills I will obtain by the end of this class.
