Practice Write 9/28

I believe that both Tinberg and Berger help me add more definitions into the meaning of a text. With Tinberg, I was introduced to ethnography in which is the study of a culture which made me realize how important it is to know about not only the culture, but notice their language, traditions, beliefs and activities that's different than other cultures. Berger on the other hand, made me realize the importance of publicity image in today's society. Berger states how people catch their attention to certain images because they know that the image behind is something that they can relate to. Overall, both Tinberg and Berger made me receive more information to the understanding of a 'text'.

Annotation #7

Summary: In this article titled, "Ways of Seeing" by John Berger, we are introduced to Berger's idea of publicity images. He introduces us to seven essays and these seven essays aren't your common three page essays where you have to write about something in five paragraphs or more, these essays involve only images or images with a few words. By looking at the images we are trying to find the hidden message and how we prefer certain images because it's something we can relate to. Berger also mentions how publicity images don't have to be just pictures, but it can also be sculptures and paintings. In conclusion publicity is very important to our culture and without it, we would be living in a very strange and different society. Quotes: 1. "Publicity is the culture of the consumer society." (140) Everything that people do today is for publicity and it's something that's been a thing for a while whether it's drama, commercials or pictures....

I feel that things that are important to consider when describing a culture is their language, the traditions they follow, the special holidays they have that other cultures don't celebrate,  if they wear any special attire for the holidays, what types of food do they make for special occasions, and lastly if they have code that they follow.

Annotation #6

Summary: In the article, the author introduces us to ethnography, which is the study of people and cultures. The author feels it should be included in our writing  and bring evidence into the writing on how a student used this to learn about a specific community.  The author also mention how this student interviewed several people and notice how by working, the community has united and they al get along. Another thing that the article mentions is how young writer's can figure out a way on what to write about as majority of them struggle. The author feels that  ethnography  will help us learn more about people and  their cultures and realize that we all come from different places. Quotes: 1. " Finally, our experiences with unfamiliar workplaces give us a valuable perspective on the classroom as our workplace, and also, in a slightly different way, the workplace of our student." (79) I feel that being in a environment helps us analyze new things and the pe...

The way I define proofreading is by looking over my paper and trying to see how many grammar errors and typos I've made throughout my paper. I also like to read all of it just to make sure that I make sense and I don't sound too repetitive. I feel like both the reader and writer have responsibility in the peer workshops because it's good to have two people reading a paper as sometimes we always end up missing a little mistake that can affect our paper. By having both the reader and writer proofread, it allows us to bring more ideas to help improve the paper and it's purpose.

Annotation #5

Summary: In the article titled, "From Inquiry on Visual Analysis", we are being taught how to be able to analyze visual texts. When looking at a visual text, we want to know what we see in the image and what catches are attention when looking at the image. We are also introduced to ethos, which is the characteristics of a spirit culture. In the other hand, we are given the understanding of logos in which we want to know what the cluster of images and text convey. Finally, we are also informed and how to understand a set rhetorically, by understanding the situation and the writer's purpose and claim. Quotes 1. "The situation is what moves a writer to write" (36) This is something that I relate because situations that I've been in my life have helped with my writing and make me sort of creative. 2. "Analyzing an ad begins with noting where the ad appears." (238) To start off, analyze where you'v seen this ad. Did you see it on TV? Newspapers?...

Annotation #4

Summary: In the article titled, "From Inquiry on Revision vs. Editing" we were informed of what the difference is between revision and editing. We are given a process of how editing and revisions should look like. We are also given the process of how peer editing should look when looking over an essay for someone else. But, when we read over these essay's, we want to be able to understand what the author is explaining in his letter and trying to realize what style of writing that the author goes for. Once all this is done, the author needs to look over the comments and focus more on grammar mistakes or using more transition words. All these steps can help the writer improve on both their writing skills and paper. Quotes: 1. "Here, too, you want to help readers focus on your main concerns, which you should explain in a cover letter." (283) You need to be able to guide your reader into a certain topic and not discuss about other things if you want to catch thei...

Unit 1 Reflection

The definition of academic writing is to be able to understand how to be writer that has an argument, evidence and analysis. It's something that I've been trying to master since my days in high school and all I can say is that I don't even come to close to being a great academic writer. For example, throughout these past four weeks, I was able to learn how I need to be able to use TEA more than ever before. Sure back in my high school days, my teachers were pretty lenient with not always using TEA on each of your body paragraph, but now that I'm in college, my professor's will be strict when it comes to that. I never really was a great academic reader, but ask me to write you a poem or a diary, and I will ensure you that I will make you think about life and feel like if you were the one who was heartbroken and lost someone important in life. But anyways, the class activities were able to make me realize that their is more to it than just using TEA, you need to wo...

I feel that my draft is okay because I have some personal experiences written on it with some analysis, but I lack evidence from the reading. I was focusing more on myself and forgetting to connect it with the readings and I feel like I need to edit my draft, as majority of my paper is focusing on my view of love and giving the reader every inch of detail about how it all went down, so they can feel like they are actually witnessing it. I believe that with the help of my peers and attending the office hours, I'll be able to get a better idea on how to narrow my paper down and include more evidence from the reading.

I'm looking forward to see what my group has to say about the book and what different ideas or questions they have to say about the book. Maybe the most challenging part can be trying to keep up with the reading because I'll be busy with work and homework for other class. But that's the whole point of college anyways.

Book Club Blog #1

In the book, The Complete Persepolis, we are introduced to the main protagonist, Marjane Satrapi. She's Iranian but she's born in the time in which there is a turmoil going on in Iran due to politics and religion. Her parents attend political protests, as so did her uncle and grandparents. This is why the only thing she is passionate about is being a social activist. She moved to the United States after her parents feel that Iran is not safe for her, and sees that life isn different without having her parents around to support. She's depressed and would later become homeless. She would then feel sick and start coughing blood, which is when she decided to head back to Iran. Back home she continues to be a social activist and do do social activist things in order to find her identity. I feel like throughout this book, we will see Marjane Satrapi a lot of different things that she probably shouldn't be doing in order to find her true identity. I felt like her time in t...

Practice Writing 9/7

My intentions for this draft is to write about a personal object that reminds me of my childhood and personal experiences. It's not an image but it connect back to Freire's description of how an object can be depicted as a visual text, as it has a meaning to someone. What I want my group members to help focus on, is seeing whether my analysis is strong enough for my evidence and if it ties back to my thesis statement.

IDEA Draft

1. Being able to connect to the author when reading their book Being able to analyze and ask myself questions when the author uses imagery in their book Trying to find what similarities both the author and I have in common Understanding where the author is coming from  2. The first time I was introduced to the beautiful game of soccer The first ever book that I read and finished in one day The girl that I once fell in love with but would later make a mistake and lose The time the girl that I loved embarrassed me on social media Being choked by an opposing player's father during a soccer game I feel like these experiences have somewhat of a way to help my reading experience as I felt that these moments helped me realize how everything is a text whether you believe it or not. Everything that I experience in my life, has only been able to continue my chapter in this world and have my personal viewpoint of this society that I live in. 3.  Visual texts have...

There really isn't any questions for me to ask about this essay at the moment, as I feel like I already have an idea of what to write about for both Freire and Albers. I can also connect their ideas to my own personal experiences that I went through in my life that can relate to them. I feel like I'm ready for the idea draft, but I know I will have questions to ask later on.

Annotation #3

Summary: In the book titled, They Say I Say, we are introduced to the many ways a person can improve on their writing skills. We learn the art of quoting and how important it is in today's world, as we use them to make our purpose clear with strong quotes to send out our message. We are also informed with being able to collect everyone's views and combining it with your own idea. Finally, we are also given methods of how to be able to answer the "so what?" and "who cares?" questions in your writing, in order to help clarify your audience what you're trying to prove. With only these few methods the writer will have a better understanding on how to make his writing more efficient. Quotes: 1. "...it is deeply engaged in some way with other people's views." (Graff, P.3) I see this quote as a way of saying; being a writer doesn't always have to be about yourself, but also have a connection towards other people and their views. 2. "...
